Meyers & Flowers warns parents about the deadly Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper as the baby product is recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission
The federal Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Fisher-Price announced a recall of 4.7 million of the company's Rock 'n Play Sleepers as the CPSC linked the product to over 30 infant deaths in 10 years.
This recall comes after outcry from pediatric and consumer groups calliing for the Fisher-Price Sleeper product to be removed from the marketplace after a recent Consumer Reports analysis linked the product to at least 32 infant deaths.
The Consumer Reports study found the deaths occurred from 2011 to 2018 with the cause of death being attributed to asphyxia or ”the inability to breathe caused by the babies’ position,” according to the publication.
Initially, the CPSC and Fisher-Price only cautioned parents to stop using the product if their babies could roll over. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a strongly worded rebuke to the CPSC alert saying that the caution did not go far enough and urged the agency to begin recalling the product.
An AAP release stated: “This product is deadly and should be recalled immediately,” said Kyle Yasuda, MD, FAAP, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. “When parents purchase a product for their baby or child, many assume that if it’s being sold in a store, it must be safe to use. Tragically, that is not the case. There is convincing evidence that the Rock ‘n Play inclined sleeper puts infants’ lives at risk, and CPSC must step up and take immediate action to remove it from stores and prevent further tragedies.”
