Multiple Brands of Magnetic Beads Recalled for Ingestion Hazard

03/28/2024 | Recalls and Warnings

As advocates for consumer safety, we at Meyers & Flowers feel compelled to address a recent recall issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regarding high-powered magnetic beads. This urgent warning underscores the potential dangers these seemingly innocuous products pose, particularly to children.

Recall Details

The CPSC recently issued a recall warning on three different brands of high-powered magnetic beads after testing determined the magnetic ball sets do not comply with the requirements of the mandatory federal toy regulation. The recalled products contain one or more magnets that fit within CPSC’s small parts cylinder, and the magnets are stronger than permitted.

These small but powerful magnets can cause serious harm if ingested, as they may attract to each other within the body, resulting in intestinal blockages, perforations, and other life-threatening injuries. The recall serves as a stark reminder of the importance of rigorous safety standards in consumer products, especially those designed for children.

Affected Units

The recall affects three brands of magnetic beads with the following product names:

  1. Stateside Bead Supply-Magnetic Beads HIGH POWER 5mm
    • The recalled beads were sold as a strand in a clear, plastic bag. Stateside Bead Supply is printed on a label on the clear plastic bag packaging. The magnetic beads are gun metal gray in color. They were sold exclusively online at www.statesidebeadsupply.com from November 2022 through June 2023 for between $7 and $9. Recalled on 3/28/2024.
  2. Getallfun-216-Piece 5mm Magnet Balls
    • The 5mm diameter magnets are sold in a set of 216 magnetic balls in various colors and encased in a clear, plastic case and a portable tin storage box. The item was sold at Getallfun’s store in Aurora, Illinois, and online at Getallfun.com from May 2021 through October 2023 for about $20. Recalled on 3/7/2024.
  3. Joybuy-Magnetic Stones Toy Creativity Development DIY Magnetic Beads, 5mm (.2 inch)
    • The 5mm-diameter magnets were sold in a set of 226 multi-colored magnetic balls encased in a clear, plastic case and a portable, tin storage box. The set includes a black storage bag. Exclusively online at Walmart.com from August 2022 through April 2023 for about $14. Recalled on 3/7/2024.

Risks and Potential Injuries:

The ingestion of high-powered magnetic beads poses grave risks, particularly to young children who may mistake them for candy or toys. When multiple magnets are ingested, they can attract to one another through intestinal walls, causing severe internal damage. Symptoms of ingestion may include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and even symptoms of poisoning. Prompt medical attention is crucial if ingestion is suspected, as delays can exacerbate the severity of injuries and complicate treatment.

While there are no reports of injuries directly involving these specific products listed, CPSC estimates 2,400 magnet ingestions have been treated in hospital emergency departments from 2017 through 2021. CPSC is aware of seven deaths since 2005 involving the ingestion of hazardous magnets.

Preventative Measures

In light of this recall, it’s essential to take proactive steps to protect yourself and your family from potential harm. If you have high-powered magnetic beads in your home, immediately remove them from accessible areas and dispose of them properly. Educate children about the dangers of swallowing small objects and ensure that toys and other products are age-appropriate and meet safety standards. By staying informed and vigilant, we can help prevent future injuries and ensure the safety of our loved ones.

Legal Implications and Recourse

If you or a loved one has suffered harm due to the ingestion of high-powered magnetic beads, you may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages. As top Chicago personal injury attorneys, we are dedicated to advocating for the rights of those harmed by dangerous products. Our experienced legal team can help you navigate the complexities of filing a claim, holding negligent manufacturers accountable, and securing the compensation you deserve.
