OneWheel: What Are They? Are They Safe? What To Do When You’re Injured?

06/21/2022 |

Electronically powered motor devices have taken over the transportation industry throughout the last 10 years. Future Motion Inc. capitalized on this growing popularity and invented the up-and-coming OneWheel device, which hit the market in 2014. Now having upwards of four different models, adrenaline junkies, teens, and users of all ages are “floating across the country” on these futuristic boards.

What is a OneWheel?

The OneWheel is an electronically powered skateboard with one large wheel in the middle. They are self-balancing, and the user propels themselves by leaning forward and breaks by leaning back. These devices can travel at speeds of up to 20mph and are said to feel like a snowboard gliding through the snow.

Future Motion Inc. claims that it can be used on all surfaces – grass, sand, hiking trails, and much more. Stating that “anyone can ride OneWheel with a little instruction and practice”, Future Motion advertises their product as easy to use and safe, but recent lawsuits and injuries contest these claims.

Is the OneWheel safe?

Despite advertisements of a dependable and easy to use product, OneWheel has been the cause of many injuries and subsequent lawsuits. Some of the most common injuries caused by this product are lacerations, broken bones, and severe brain injuries. In some of the most extreme cases, OneWheel skateboards have even caused death.

The OneWheel is equipped with a pushback feature that is intended to protect the rider from going too fast and running out of battery. However, due to inadequate manufacturing and direction, the OneWheel has the tendency to ‘nosedive’ and launch the user off the front.

The main cause of injuries is when the device comes to a stop and the front slams down onto the ground. Because of its ability to travel at a high speed, this abrupt stop launches the user off the front of the device which, even with proper protective gear, can cause serious injuries.

Future Motion Inc. has not addressed the issues surrounding the nosedive malfunction and have continued to promote their product as safe and simple to use.

What to do When You’re Injured:

“There are two types of OneWheel riders: Those who HAVE FALLEN, and those who WILL FALL” – oneRADwheel

If you or a loved one are injured through the malfunction or ignorance of Future Motion Inc. and their OneWheel product, you may be entitled to legal compensation.
