Major Victory Secured Against UNUM: Disability Benefits Reinstated for North Carolina Surgeon

08/29/2025 | Record Settlements and Verdicts

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chicago, IL – August 2025 – Bryant Legal Group and Meyers & Flowers have achieved another decisive victory against UNUM, the nation’s largest disability insurer. On August 19, 2025, UNUM reversed its prior denial and reinstated long-term disability benefits for a North Carolina sports medicine orthopedic surgeon battling a serious medical condition.

UNUM had previously terminated benefits, weaponizing treatment notes from the surgeon’s oncologist that referenced intermittent exercise, despite overwhelming medical evidence and the suspension of hospital privileges, which made it impossible for him to safely return to the physical and cognitive demands of surgery and hospital call obligations. After a vigorous appeal led by David A. Bryant and Jennifer Danish of Bryant Legal Group and supported by Peter J. Flowers and the team at Meyers & Flowers, UNUM conceded and reinstated benefits retroactive to February 4, 2025.

This victory comes on the heels of another high-profile court ruling in Minnesota, where Bryant Legal Group and Meyers & Flowers successfully challenged UNUM’s denial of disability benefits to another physician client. In both cases, the firms demonstrated that UNUM’s internal review process disregarded medical realities and contractual protections for policyholders.

“UNUM’s repeated pattern of denying legitimate physician claims reveals how the company continues to put claims denial targets and profits over people,” said David Bryant. “These reversals are not simply about benefits owed to individual doctors—they are about holding insurers accountable when they break the promises made in their policies.”

“By working together, our firms are ensuring that hardworking professionals receive the benefits they paid for and deserve. We will continue to challenge insurers whenever they put profits over the people who depend on them.” said Peter J. Flowers.

Bryant Legal Group and Meyers & Flowers concentrate on representing physicians, executives, and other professionals in complex disability and revenue cycle disputes against disability insurance and commercial health insurance carriers.
