Oxygen Concentrator Fire Hazard: What You Need to Know & Your Legal Rights

04/01/2025 | Recalls and Warnings

Oxygen concentrators are lifesaving medical devices designed to provide supplemental oxygen to individuals with respiratory conditions such as COPD, asthma, and other lung diseases. However, recent recalls have revealed a serious safety concern—some oxygen concentrators pose a fire hazard, putting users and their families at significant risk. If you or a loved one have experienced a fire caused by an oxygen concentrator, you may be entitled to legal compensation.

Recent FDA Recall Due to Fire Hazards

The FDA has issued a recall for an oxygen concentrator due to the risk of overheating, melting, and even catching fire. This recall highlights serious safety concerns that could result in severe injuries, property damage, and fatalities.

  1. Jiangsu Jumao X-Care Medical Equipment Co. Recall
  • Model: TruAIRE-5 Oxygen Concentrator (Model O2C5L)
  • Serial Numbers: JA2311000001 to JA2312000740
  • Issue: Reports of devices overheating, melting, and catching fire
  • FDA Classification: Class I recall (most serious type)
  • Details: The recall was initiated due to a manufacturing defect that causes the device to overheat during prolonged use, increasing the likelihood of component failure and combustion. Multiple users have reported incidents where the concentrator emitted smoke, melted, or caught fire, posing a direct risk to patient safety. The FDA advises all users to stop using the affected devices immediately and contact the manufacturer or healthcare provider for alternative oxygen therapy solutions.

Currently, this is the only recall reported by the FDA related to oxygen concentrators and fire hazards. However, other devices may still pose risks, and incidents should be reported to the appropriate authorities.

How Do Oxygen Concentrators Cause Fires?

Oxygen concentrators work by extracting oxygen from the air and delivering it in a concentrated form to users. While oxygen itself is not flammable, it accelerates combustion, meaning that any spark or overheating component can lead to a dangerous fire. The most common causes of oxygen concentrator fires include:

  • Electrical Malfunctions: Faulty wiring, capacitor failures, or overheating components can spark fires.
  • Improper Storage: Placing oxygen concentrators near flammable materials increases fire risks.
  • Manufacturing Defects: Poorly designed or substandard parts can fail and ignite.
  • Lack of Safety Features: Some recalled models lack the necessary safety mechanisms to prevent overheating and combustion.

Legal Rights for Victims of Oxygen Concentrator Fires

If an oxygen concentrator caused a fire that led to injuries, property damage, or death, you may have legal options to hold the manufacturer accountable. Possible claims include:

  • Product Liability: Manufacturers have a duty to ensure their products are safe for consumer use. If a defective oxygen concentrator caused a fire, the manufacturer may be held liable.
  • Negligence: If the company failed to properly test or address known defects, victims can pursue compensation for medical expenses, property damage, and pain and suffering.
  • Wrongful Death Claims: If a loved one tragically lost their life due to an oxygen concentrator fire, surviving family members may file a wrongful death lawsuit.

What to Do If You Have Been Affected by an Oxygen Concentrator Fire

If you or a loved one have experienced a fire linked to an oxygen concentrator, follow these steps to protect your rights:

  1. Seek Medical Attention: Treat any burn injuries, smoke inhalation, or other medical complications immediately.
  2. Document the Incident: Take photos of the damage, save the defective device, and gather any purchase or medical records.
  3. Consult an Attorney: A personal injury lawyer experienced in product liability cases can help you explore your legal options.
