Jack Stand Recall

Jack stands are used to safely support the weight of a vehicle while work is being performed, but if a jack stand fails injury or death can possibly occur to a person when they are defectively designed or defectively manufactured. Two different jack stand models sold by Harbor Freight have been recalled. If you are affected by this, make sure to contact a defective medical device lawyer in Chicago.

Harbor Freight Recalls 1.5 Million Jack Stands

On March 20, 2020, and May 3, 2020, Harbor Freight Tools notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about a recall involving over 1,500,000 jack stands they sell at their stores all around the United States. The recall by the NHTSA involved the following brands and models:

  • Pittsburgh Automotive 6 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands Part No.: 61197 (manufactured between June 2012 through November 2019) and 61196 (manufactured between December 2012 through December 2019)
  • Pittsburgh Automotive 3 Ton Heavy Duty Steel Jack Stands Part No.: 56731 (manufactured between January 2020 through March 2020) and 61196 (manufactured between December 2012 through December 2019)

Harbor Freight’s Pittsburg Automotive Jack stands could be used in commercial settings by mechanics in automotive maintenance and repair shops, collision centers and auto body restoration shops. They can also be found in the garages and storerooms of home mechanics across the county.

For certain units, the ratchet teeth on the jack stands lifting extension post may inconsistently engage the pawl to a sufficient depth…Under load, with a potential shift in weight, on certain units, the jack stand pawl may disengage fromthe  extension lifting post, allowing the stand to drop suddenly, with the potential to injure people near or under a lifted vehicle.
