Harbor Freight Recalls 1.5 Million Jack Stands

On March 20, 2020 and May 3, 2020, Harbor Freight Tools notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about a recall involving over 1,500,000 jack stands they sell at their stores all around the United States. The recall by the NHTSA involved the following brand and models:

Harbor Freight’s Pittsburg Automotive Jack stands could be used in commercial settings by mechanics in automotive maintenance and repair shops, collision centers and auto body restoration shops. They can also be found in the garages and storerooms of home mechanics across the county.

For certain units, the rachet teeth on the jack stands lifting extension post may inconsistently engage the pawl to a sufficient depth…Under load, with a potential shift in weight, on certain units the jack stand pawl may disengage from extension lifting post, allowing the stand to drop suddenly, with potential to injure people near or under a lifted vehicle.
