Michael J. Colwell, Of Counsel

Judge Michael J. Colwell, retired, is a graduate of DePaul University College of Law and Loras College, 1969.

Judge Colwell was elected Circuit Court judge in 1990, having served from 1984 to 1990 as an Associate Circuit Judge. In 1990, he was also elected Chief Judge, serving in that capacity until 1993, when the Illinois Supreme Court assigned him to the Second District Appellate Court until 2001.

He was elected presiding justice of the Appellate Court in 2000. Upon his return to the trial court, he was named Presiding Judge of the Civil Division.

My forty plus years of experience as an attorney, twenty six of which were spent as a Trial Court Judge and Appellate Court Justice, brings a unique perspective to our clients’ cases. Zealous advocacy also includes fairness and finding the right result for every client which the firm represents.

Judge Colwell's accomplishments include leading the judiciary's participation in the $32 million construction of the Kane County Judicial Center. As a practicing attorney, he served as President of the Kane County Bar Association and as a member of the Illinois State Bar Association Assembly.

He has been an active member of the Illinois Judicial Conference and the Conference of Chief Judges, both as chair and as a member of various committees working to improve and streamline the Illinois courts.

Judge Colwell retired from the bench in November of 2010. He has returned to private practice, having been named Of Counsel to the law firm of Meyers & Flowers of Chicago and St. Charles, Illinois. He practices in the areas of Mediation, Civil Appeals, Probate and Guardianship, Corporate, Zoning, and Land Use Litigation.
