Johnson & Johnson's DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc., sold nearly a hundred thousand surgically implanted ASR hip replacement systems, knowing that these all-metal devices had a high incidence of failure, required repeat surgery to replace them after a short time and introduced toxic metal shards into the bodies of patients who received them.
Recalled: DePuy ASR Hip Device Are you injured or suffering from this device?
DePuy suppressed the results of unfavorable, internal company testing and continued to sell the ASR hip replacement devices after their own surgical consultants informed them that they were defective and harmful. Even after company executives finally made the decision to stop selling the ASR device, they continued to sell it for another year while "phasing" it out and while patients continued to have this defective and dangerous device implanted in their bodies.
The FDA has received more than a thousand adverse reports regarding the DePuy hip devices.
What are DePuy ASR Hip Replacement devices?
The DePuy ASR hip replacement device is a hip "resurfacing system." Unlike hip replacement, hip resurfacing systems replace only the ball and cap in the hip joint and anchors into the bone in the leg, rather than replacing the function of the entire hip.
The DePuy ASR device design includes a metal ball in direct contact with the metal cup it fits into. The all-metal surfaces of the components of the device grind against each other, constantly wearing harmful, metal debris into the surrounding tissue and the patient's blood stream. This debris cause severe pain, tissue damage, bone erosion, development of tumors and many other injuries and diseases. While hip replacement devices normally last fifteen years, the DePuy ASR implanted device frequently fails after only two years.
