Considered a drug of last resort for patients with life-threatening arrhythmias in the heart, Amiodarone has been used “off label” for other heart rhythm issues with devastating results. At the Chicago offices of Meyers & Flowers we are representing patients, or their surviving family members, who were incorrectly prescribed this drug and who are now forced to deal with life changing side effects.
What is Amiodarone?
Amiodarone is a drug developed for use in high risk patients who have not responded to other heart rhythm control drugs, or who cannot tolerate drugs that are considered safer. These patients are faced with a hard choice; either to risk the known side effects of Amiodarone in treating life-threatening heart arrhythmias, or risk death from the condition.
Marketed under the brand names of Pacerone and Cordarone this drug has been linked to serious and sometimes fatal side effects which include:
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Degenerative muscle disease
- Optic nerve damage
- Toxic epidermal necrosis
- Liver damage
- Thyroid problems
- Increase in heart arrhythmia
For patients who have not exhausted other treatment for their heart rhythm issues, or who are presenting other types of heart rhythm problems, the prescription of Amiodarone is considered “off label” by the FDA due to the high risk factor. This group of patients has been prescribed a high risk drug for conditions that could have been treated with safer drugs and are now facing serious, and sometimes life threatening side effects from Amiodarone. Amiodarone lawsuit for Chicago area residents
Chicago medical malpractice attorneys at Meyers & Flowers are representing those who have been wrongly prescribed this high risk drug long before their medical condition warranted such drastic measures.
The rights of patients to be fully informed of the risks associated with any prescribed drug is a fundamental element to a safe health care system. Doctors who prescribed Amiodarone for less serious arrhythmia problems or who did not exhaust other drug therapy when treating serious heart problems are responsible for the deterioration in quality of life for patient. Unfortunately, some Chicago residents have died not as a result of their arrhythmia, but from conditions caused by Amiodarone such as pulmonary fibrosis.
One of the more serious side effects of Amiodarone is pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease that has no known cure. The progression of the disease, once established, can be slowed but the condition is almost always fatal within 3 to 5 years of diagnosis. This condition causes lung tissue to become scarred which makes it harder to breathe. Scarring cannot be reversed.
Lethal drug combinations
Amiodarone is considered a last chance drug but when combined with other heart medications such as Warfarin (Coumadin) or a class of drugs called statins which reduce cholesterol, the risks are multiplied. Doctors have prescribed Amiodarone for patients who are also on other heart drugs which can have serious adverse effects.
