Meyers & Flowers warns Diabetics about the international recall issued for Medtronic’s diabetes infusion sets
Meyers & Flowers is warning diabetic patients of Medtronic’s large-scale recall of diabetes infusion sets. The infusion sets connect to portable insulin pumps, so insulin is constantly delivered.
This fall Medtronic, a multi-national medical device manufacturer, initiated the worldwide voluntary recall of specific lots of its diabetes infusion sets, which are used with all models of Medtronic insulin pumps. The sets produced before April of 2017 are being recalled due to a faulty vent membrane possibly becoming blocked by fluid during the process of priming/fill-tubing following an infusion set change.
This dangerous product defect may lead to the over-delivery of insulin after an infusion set change causing the patient to develop hypoglycemia, and in extreme cases, lead to death.
For a person with diabetes, hypoglycemia, also known as low blood sugar, is a serious condition which may result in:
- Poor coordination
- Poor concentration
- Numbness in mouth and tongue
- Passing out
