Dr. Herbert O. Phillips IV, MD, JD is both an attorney and an orthopaedic surgeon.

An orthopaedic surgeon for thirteen years before entering the legal profession, Dr. Phillips focuses his law practice on orthopaedic medical device product liability cases. He helps other attorneys more quickly and accurately define the nature and extent of design and manufacturing defects in orthopaedic medical devices. Dr. Phillips' role as a plaintiff's product liability attorney ranges from helping the clients of his own firm, to assisting other law firms across the nation.

For the past two years the majority of Dr. Phillips' work has centered on hip replacement devices with alternate bearings (metal-on-metal; ceramic-on-ceramic and ceramic-on-metal). The current focus of Dr. Phillips' work is on metal-on-metal (MOM) hip replacement and hip implants with large diameter heads (LDH) and neck/taper modular junction problems.

The area of alternate bearing technology and modular taper junction failure is developing rapidly and for this reason Dr. Phillips has decided to dedicate the majority of his work to this topic and to implants with these problems. Dr. Phillips is not currently accepting non-orthopaedic product liability cases.

Dr. Phillips received his undergraduate degree in Pre-Medicine from Davidson College in 1977 and his MD with Honors from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in 1981. He received his law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 2005.

Dr. Phillips is admitted to practice before all North Carolina Courts, U.S. District Courts in the Western, Middle and Eastern Districts of North Carolina, and 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.
